How To Remove Stains from The Mattress (And Other Bed Related Cleaning Hacks)

How to get out stains on a mattress

What is your pet peeve when it comes to cleaning your pillows? How about your mattress?

Did you know the lifespan of a mattress is supposedly seven to ten years? And your pillows depending on the type of material it’s made from can last up to five to 10 years.

Now, that is a pretty long time to have any item, so of course, it would be wise and necessary to maintain and keep it clean.

Most pillows come with a care tag, I don’t think there is one for mattresses, but do yourself a favor and check if there is one available.

Usually, when it comes to cleaning pillows it’s much more convenient to throw it into the washing machine. Depending on what type of detergent you use, the pillow can come out clean. But, if it isn’t to your liking, there is another way to get the stains out.

Then, of course, there is the good old mattress, unfortunately, you can’t throw it in the washing machine. So the next best thing is to clean it by hand.

So this is my attempt on using this cleaning hack in removing stains from my mattress and pillows using four ingredients baking soda, hydrogen peroxide, water, and dish soap. I don’t know if you’ve found yourself frustrated at looking at stains that you know you’ve tried cleaning up in the past, only to have a constant reminder that it wasn’t effective enough. Especially if you have kid(s) it can be a challenge to maintain a tidy and clean home no matter the size.

So I had been searching on YouTube and Pinterest. On ways to remove pee stains from my mattress. My little one loves to sneak into my bed and used to sometimes forget to wake up to use the bathroom. Thank goodness she’s out of that stage. But the stains still remained.
And came across a few articles raving how the use of baking soda can help with cleaning hard to get out stains from certain fabrics.

Some of the cleaning hacks were a bit vague in their description and some were a little short on information. So I decided that the best way to find out if it was just hype or this method was legit is to try it out for myself. Boy, I am I glad I did. And so will you.

Now there were some pros and cons to this method but I’ll get to that.

What were we cleaning: Mattress and pillows

What was needed: baking soda, peroxide, spray bottle, and water. Timer, fan,& vacuum

What was the process:
• Mixed all ingredients together inside the spray bottle
• Removed all the linens and pillowcases.
• Sprayed pillows and mattress
• Set the timer for at least an hour for the mixture to set in
• Tossed pillows in the washer machine
• Placed fans to help with drying the mattress

What was the end result:

Before stained mattress
Pros:
The pillows went from a yellowish color to white made it look all brand new. Also, it removed the odors. As far as the mattress was concerned it removed the urine stains as well as the odors that were deeply ingrained in the mattress that couldn’t go away even with bleach.

The solution is non-toxic aka green clean.

Cons:
This took a few hours to dry when it came down to the mattress. I guess the drying times vary depending on what type of mattress you have. I have one from (Ikea mattress)
It took mine overnight for mine to dry and so I wasn’t too thrilled with not sleeping on my bed.
Also depending on how much of the mixture you use, it may not come out as pristine as you may like. I know for next time I will definitely add more peroxide to the mix to ensure it can really come out as white as possible.

Conclusion:

What made this more effective than the average detergent or cleaning solutions? That would be thanks to good old chemistry. When baking soda and hydrogen peroxide come together only good things can come out of it. But in all seriousness baking soda is a natural abrasive that is good for deodorizing and whitening. While hydrogen peroxide is best for sanitizing and disinfecting. Using this cleaning hack method also helps with starting my deep cleaning routine for the end of the year. Let’s face it we spend plenty of time on our beds and the last thing you want to worry about is it clean enough. But don’t take my word for it, try it out for yourself and let me know how it worked out for you.
